Police have recovered the body of another person 12 days after a fire broke out at a garment factory and chemical warehouse in the Rupnagar area of Dhaka’s Mirpur.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner Md Makhsudur Rahman said the body was retrieved from the burnt factory on Sunday afternoon.
“The body is burnt on one side and melted on the other. However, based on the hair, it is believed to be a woman’s body.”
He added that a total of 17 bodies have been recovered in connection with the fire so far.
“Information about a missing woman was received verbally. Further action will be taken after testing the DNA sample,” he said.
On Oct 14, a fire broke out at a chemical warehouse and an adjacent garment factory in Rupnagar.
Sixteen bodies were retrieved from the second and third floors of the factory that day.
Makhsudur said the factory could not be accessed immediately due to the conditions, adding: “The latest body was retrieved from the same area as the others.”
Rupnagar Police chief Morshed Alam told bdnews24.com that relatives had identified 10 of the 16 victims, but DNA samples were taken from all.
The bodies were handed over to the families on Oct 19.
The 16 people are Abdul Alim, 14, Asma Akhter, 13, Mukta Begum, 30, Tofail Ahmed, 22, Nazmul Islam, 40, Nargis Akhter, 18, Joy Mia, 20, Mona Akhter Samia, 14, Mahira, 14, Al Mamun, 38, Sanowar Hossain, 24, Farzana Akhter, 15, Mousumi Khatun, 23, Rabiul Islam, 20, Nur Alam Sarkar, 23, and Khalid Hasan, 30.
