Another Boeing 737 faces engine trouble after takeoff, Biman flight returns

A Biman Bangladesh Airlines Boeing 737 aircraft bound for Bangkok has been forced to return to Dhaka from Myanmar airspace an hour after takeoff.

It marks the fifth technical incident involving a Biman Boeing aircraft in just 20 days.

Flight BG-388, carrying 146 passengers, departed from Dhaka at 12:06pm for Bangkok. However, after detecting excessive engine vibration mid-air, the pilot decided to turn back and landed safely in Dhaka.

Biman spokesperson Al Masud Khan said the airline’s engineering team was looking into the issue. “The exact issue will be determined after investigation,” he said.

The affected plane had recently undergone a heavy maintenance check at Biman’s own hangar. It had resumed service on domestic routes for a few days before being deployed on the international sector. The stranded passengers were later flown to Bangkok at 6:00pm on a separate Boeing 777 aircraft.

The latest glitch adds to growing concerns over the reliability of Biman’s Boeing fleet, even as the government moves forward with plans to procure 25 new Boeing aircraft.
