A man from Mymensingh’s Haluaghat Upazila has allegedly been beaten after crossing the border and entering India illegally “for love”.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) rescued him from the border after he sustained injuries.

The incident occurred around 9pm on Tuesday in the Butiapara border area in Mymensingh’s Haluaghat, according to Lt Col Nurul Azim Bayezid, captain of the Mymensingh-39 BGB Battalion.

The injured, 45-year-old Anowar Hossain, hails from the Upazila’s Uttar Nalkura village. He has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.

In a statement on Wednesday afternoon, the BGB said Anowar is involved in a romantic relationship with an Indian woman.

He repeatedly crossed the border illegally, risking his life, for the sake of the relationship.

Last year, Anowar was attacked while entering India for the same reason. Still, he has not been deterred.

The BGB said Anowar crossed the zero point on Tuesday night and entered about 350 yards into India.

As soon as he reached the barbed wire fence, a group of hill or Garo people waiting in ambush attacked him. Anowar was seriously injured.

He managed to return to the Bangladesh side despite his injuries. His family rescued him with the help of the BGB and took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

When his condition deteriorated there, the doctors advised that he be transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He was taken to Dhaka overnight.

Lt Col Nurul said the BGB is strictly protecting the border to prevent any kind of illegal infiltration, including drugs and smuggling.

However, such unwanted and risky incidents keep occurring as a result of people disobeying border laws, he said.
