Students at Jahangirnagar University have protested against the extrajudicial killing of Shamim Ahmed, also known as Shamim Mollah, a former student and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader, who was attacked and killed at the university campus.
A protest procession was taken out from the Mahua stage of the university under the banner of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement around 11 am on Thursday.
The procession, after winding its way through various roads within the campus, ended in front of the new administrative building.
A brief rally was then held there by the students. Slogans such as 'Why killings on campus? We demand answers from the administration, 'We don't accept extrajudicial killings, we are human', 'Destroy the sanctuaries of the killers, demolish them', and 'Stop student politics, it must be done' were heard from the students during the procession.
Touhid Siyam, a coordinator of the Jahangirnagar University (JU) chapter of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said, “We have observed that a group of people, in a very planned manner, subjected Shamim Mollah to mob justice, beating him severely. Subsequently, he died while in police custody. Considering all the evidence, including videos, photos, and CCTV footage related to this incident, the university administration must file a case within 24 hours, identifying the real culprits.”
