Students of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University in Tangail have blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway to stage protests against the reinstatement of the quota system in public service.
They blocked the highway at Ashekpur bypass around 10:30 on Saturday. The blockade caused a 20-kilometre-long tailback on both sides of the highway. The agitating students left the highway after one and a half hours of blockade.
According to UNB, the blockade halted vehicular movement on both sides of the highway, resulting in huge traffic gridlock and causing immense suffering to passengers.
Tangail Sadar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mohammad Ruhul Amin Sharif said, “After hearing the news of the blockade, we went there and talked to the students. Then students lifted the blockade peacefully."
Meanwhile, Rajshahi University students on Saturday blocked the highway that connected Rajshahi and Natore with the capital.
The protesters demanded immediate reinstatement of a circular that was issued in 2018 to abolish the quota system in government jobs.
