Speculations run high about a chance meeting between Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and long-exiled BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman during the UK visit of the head of interim government.

Chief Adviser Yunus is scheduled to visit the United Kingdom on June 9-13, incidentally, in the wake of tensions over some issues in the domestic political arena where BNP is the key actor.

Though acting foreign secretary Ruhul Alam Siddique Wednesday said the official itinerary of the CA visit does not include the envisaged meeting, highly competent sources at the ministry told the FE that the meeting may take place if interest would be shown from the BNP side.

And it may be held on June 12, an official said, preferring not to be quoted by name.

This will be the first bilateral visit to a European country by the Chief Adviser since assuming office following the July-August changeover.

"The UK is a strong democratic state that emphasises promoting democratic values and good governance in developing countries. Through this visit, the interim government's commitment to ongoing reforms, democratic processes, and establishing good governance in Bangladesh will be effectively highlighted," the foreign secretary told a briefing on the day.

Responding to a question, he said extradition of Awami League leaders staying in London may not be discussed during this visit as it requires court directives.

"During the visit, the Chief Adviser is expected to have an audience with His Majesty King Charles III. In international diplomacy, an audience with the British monarch is considered a highly prestigious diplomatic opportunity," he said.

A bilateral meeting between the Chief Adviser and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer, is also likely to take place during the tour, he added.

In addition, the UK's Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, David Lammy, several important ministers, political leaders and prominent figures from leading think-tanks are expected to pay courtesy call on the Chief Adviser.

"Since Brexit, a new chapter has opened in Bangladesh-UK commercial relations. These meetings will discuss strengthening trade, investment, and economic cooperation."

In particular, the visit is expected to play a key role in expanding market access for Bangladeshi products in the UK, securing GSP- Plus benefits, attracting new British investments, and enhancing economic relations through joint ventures.

Discussions are also expected to cover strengthening cooperation in education and cultural exchange, information technology, social innovation, human rights, migration, energy, and security sectors, Mr Ruhul told the press.

Moreover, the visit is likely to prioritise bilateral and multilateral cooperation in combating climate change, as well as technology transfer and UK support for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During his stay in London, the Chief Adviser would seek stronger support and assistance from the UK for repatriation of the Rohingyas and a sustainable solution to this humanitarian crisis.

Additionally, discussions may take place on various regional and global issues of mutual interest. These dialogues are expected to open new horizons for development, prosperity, and mutual cooperation between the two countries.

It is also expected that, during the visit, the Secretaries-General of the Commonwealth and the International Maritime Organisation may pay courtesy call on the Chief Adviser.

Apart from the bilateral meetings, on June 11, the head of interim government would participate in a special discussion at the renowned Chatham House in London.

At this event, he would share his experiences and perspectives on Bangladesh's current realities, future prospects, and ongoing challenges.

The foreign secretary told the press that 'in recognition of his outstanding contributions to promoting harmonious coexistence among people, nature, and the environment, improving the lives of marginalized communities, and building a peaceful, compassionate, and sustainable world, King Charles III has nominated the Chief Adviser for this year's prestigious 'King Charles III Harmony Award'.

The award is expected to be presented to the Chief Adviser by the King at a ceremony scheduled to be held at St James's Palace in London on June 12.

"This is not just a personal honour for the Chief Adviser but also a unique recognition of prestige and pride for Bangladesh. The award will further enhance and illuminate Bangladesh's image on the global stage," he notes.

Additionally, in celebration of its 35th anniversary, The King's Foundation has organised a special gala dinner on the evening of June 11. The Chief Adviser is also expected to attend this event.

"In summary, this visit will deepen and consolidate the longstanding friendly relations between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom, enhance Bangladesh's international standing, elevate bilateral economic relations to a new height, and play a crucial role in securing international support for the ongoing democratic process in Bangladesh," he opines.
