The army has launched an operation with special arrangements in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur to address recent issues of widespread robbery and crime.
In addition to a permanent army camp, a temporary crime-fighting camp has been established in the area, reports bdnews24.com.
Major Nazim Ahmad, in charge of the Bosila camp, said that temporary camps will be set up in every residential area of the capital’s Mohammadpur.
He told bdnews24.com on Sunday that there are two permanent camps located in Sher-E-Bangla Nagar and Bosila.
However, due to traffic issues surrounding these camps, rapid response and patrolling have become challenging.
“A temporary army camp has been established in Dhaka Udyan. This camp will also cover Chand Udyan, Chandrima Udyan, and Nobodoy Housing Society areas.”
He added that the camp could be relocated to Nobodoy Housing Society or Mohammadia Housing Society if necessary.
The army officer urged residents to report any crime by providing video clips or evidence to the camp.
The army is also active at the Geneva Camp area and is working to apprehend criminals.
Major Nazim mentioned that joint forces arrested six individuals from this camp on Sunday.
Additionally, a joint operation by RAB, police, and BGB led to the arrest of 45 people the previous night.
Following the fall of the Awami League government, law and order deteriorated significantly, resulting in a surge in robbery, theft, and other crimes.
Mohammadpur has been particularly affected, with numerous robberies, stabbings, and violent incidents causing widespread fear.
Although robberies occur almost daily, many incidents go unreported to police.
For example, a mini super shop in Mohammadpur's Bosila was targeted by armed robbers, while a vehicle belonging to Nestle was stopped in Mohammadpur Housing Limited, leading to a theft of Tk 1,185,000 at knifepoint.
There was also a robbery at a businessman's house involving individuals in army uniforms.
On Oct 18, two brothers were shot dead over a market committee dispute in the Shia Mosque area.
Although some youths have been fatally attacked on the road near Green View Housing Society, many other incidents remain undisclosed.
On Oct 23, a Pathao delivery man named Sohail Tanveer was robbed at Chanmia Housing around 8pm, losing a significant amount of money after being threatened.
Tanveer reported the incident to police but did not file a formal complaint, noting that many such cases are often not recorded.
In response to the rising crime, several Mohammadpur residents met with Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner last Thursday, demanding increased security. Two days later, around 50 residents visited the police station, setting a 72-hour deadline for improvements in law and order.
