Arrest warrants for former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 45 others have been sent to the inspector general of police (IGP) in connection with genocide charges during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
Chief Prosecutor to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Mohammad Tajul Islam confirmed the information to journalists on Wednesday, reports bdnews24.com.
Earlier in the day, the chief prosecutor inspected the progress of renovation work at the tribunal building, accompanied by Industries Advisor Adilur Rahman Khan and Law Advisor Asif Nazrul.
Tajul said, “Legal actions against those complicit in genocide are being taken swiftly. The arrest warrants for the 46 individuals have been forwarded to the IGP.”
In addition, the law advisor expressed optimism that the tribunal’s main building would resume judicial proceedings between Nov 1 and Nov 3, following the completion of renovation.
On Oct 17, the International Crimes Tribunal issued arrest warrants for Hasina, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, and 44 others in connection with separate cases regarding alleged genocide and crimes against humanity.
The order was issued by a bench of three judges led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, with Justices Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury also on the bench.
