Attacks on Prothom Alo, The Daily Star an assault on media freedom: EU envoy

European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller has said that attacks on Prothom Alo and The Daily Star constitute a direct assault on media freedom and freedom of expression, terming the incidents a “terrible moment for Bangladesh’s democracy.”

He made the remarks on Sunday afternoon while visiting the Prothom Alo office in the capital to express solidarity, the Bangla daily reported.

Ambassador Miller strongly condemned the attacks, arson and looting at the The Daily Star and Prothom Alo offices that took place on Thursday night.

Stressing the importance of a free and independent media, he said such incidents must not be repeated.

The EU, Miller added, stands firmly in support of press freedom and democratic values in Bangladesh.
