A case has been started against Jalal Ahmed, an independent Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) vice-president candidate, accusing him of attempting to murder his roommate during a violent altercation at Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall.
Hall Provost Sirajul Islam filed the case at Shahbagh Police Station on Wednesday, bdnews24.com reports.
According to the case statement, Jalal's roommate Robiul Haque went to room No. 462 of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall and fell asleep.
Around 12:30 am, Jalal entered the room, switched on the light, and began dragging a chair around noisily, which woke Robiul.
When asked to keep the noise down, an enraged Jalal first struck Robiul with a wooden chair, injuring his forehead. He then hit him with a fluorescent tube light, causing deep cuts to his chest and left arm.
Other students intervened and took Robiul to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
University authorities subsequently handed Jalal over to the police and expelled him from the hall.
