Australia has announced that it will now process visas for Bangladeshi citizens through its High Commission in Dhaka, replacing the previous system of handling visa applications in New Delhi.

In a phone call on Thursday, Australian Home Minister Tony Burke conveyed this decision to Bangladesh Home Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. The home adviser later informed the advisory council that the decision would take effect immediately, according to a statement posted on the Facebook page Chief Adviser GOB today.

This development follows a request made by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus during Australian Home Minister Burke’s visit to Bangladesh in October last year.
