Bagerhat doctor gets show-cause notice for ‘assaulting patients’

A show-cause notice has been served upon a doctor of Bagerhat Sadar Hospital for allegedly assaulting two patients and a guardian.

The accused doctor is Abul Kalam Azad, a senior consultant of Gynae Department of the hospital.

A pregnant woman, Rozina Begum, 20, wife of Alam Sheikh of Hamchapur village in Morelganjupazila, was brought to the hospital by her mother, Nasima Begum, on early Sunday following her acute labour pain.

When Nasima’s daughter was admitted to the hospital, she alleged, the doctor asked them to leave the ward and he slapped her and her daughter as they took time in getting out of the ward.

Another expecting mother, Fatema Begum, who was admitted to the ward, alleged that Dr Azad slapped her, too.

According to sources at the hospital, Dr Azad always misbehaves with patients.

Jahidul Islam Jadu, member of district health management committee, said hearing screams of the patients, he rushed to the ward and came to know that Dr Azad assaulted two patients and a guardian.

Bagerhat Civil Surgeon DrArun Chandra Mondol said he served the notice upon the accused doctor asking him to come up with a reply within three days over the allegation brought against him, reports UNB.

However, Dr Azad could not be reached over phone for comments.

Meanwhile, Khulna divisional health director Doctor Sushanto Kumar Roy formed a three member committee, led by divisional deputy director Dr Hosne Ara, to investigate the allegation.

The committee has been asked to submit report within seven working days.
