The Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) has raised alarm over the growing number of thefts and robberies targeting jewellery businesses, urging authorities to reinforce security measures during the extended Eid holidays.

At a press conference held at its office on New Eskaton Road on Friday, BAJUS Vice President Riponul Hasan highlighted the vulnerability of the country's 40,000 jewellery establishments, stating that an alarming rise in criminal activities has left jewellers deeply concerned.

Between January and 26 March, at least 23 jewellery shops across Bangladesh fell victim to theft or burglary, with Dhaka recording the highest number of incidents at 11. Other affected districts include Munshiganj, Sylhet, Cumilla, Khulna, and Habiganj.

Amid fears that criminal activities may intensify during the Eid holidays, jewellers are calling for urgent intervention.

BAJUS Acting President Gulzar Ahmed stressed the need for both institutional and personal security reinforcements.

He urged jewellers to install CCTV cameras, deploy more security personnel, and collaborate with market associations to enhance protective measures.

Additionally, BAJUS has demanded armed security forces to guard jewellery establishments and swift legal action against perpetrators.

The association warned that if security conditions fail to improve, they will determine their next course of action after 15 April.
