The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued danger signal 7 for Mongla and Payra ports after Cyclone Midhili hurtled towards the coasts after intensifying over the Bay of Bengal.
Danger signal No. 6 was advised for Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar ports, according to the Met Office’s latest bulletin.
The storm was centred 415 km southwest of the Chattogram Port, 395 km southwest of Cox’s Bazar Port, 265 km southwest of the Mongla Port and 270 km southwest of the Payra Port at 9 am on Friday.
The tip of the cyclone might sweep past the coastline by noon on Friday, the bulletin said.
Coastal districts of Lakshmipur, Feni, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and shoal areas could experience tidal waves rising up 3-5 feet, it said.
According to a report on bdnews24.com, the deep depression over the northwest bay and adjoining area moved northeastward further and intensified into a cyclonic storm on Friday dawn.
The north Bay of Bengal and its offshore islands and coastal areas in Bangladesh are likely to experience heavy rainfall with gusty wind, the Met Office forecast.
All fishing boats and trawlers over the north bay and deep sea were advised to remain in shelter until further notice.
