Bangladesh has expressed deep condolences over the loss of lives in the earthquake that struck Haiti on Saturday.

Foreign Minister Dr A K Abdul Momen in a message sent to his counterpart Claude Joseph conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families, relatives and friends of the departed souls in the earthquake.

Dr Momen wished a quick recovery to those who have been badly affected by the devastating earthquake, according to a foreign ministry statement on Thursday.

‘‘My thoughts and prayers are with your government and the people of Haiti at this difficult time,’’ Dr Momen added. He hoped that the country would soon be able to overcome the impact of the catastrophe.

‘‘Bangladesh has been ravaged by natural disasters time and again, but we have overcome these calamities with strong leadership and resilience of the people,’’ the Foreign Minister stated.

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Haiti on Saturday, killing at least 2,189 people and injuring thousands more.
