Bangladesh reports 5,343 coronavirus cases, 77 deaths in 24 hours

 Bangladesh has registered 77 new fatalities from the coronavirus, the most in a daily count, taking the death toll to 9,661.

The caseload surged to 678,937 after 5,343 people tested positive for COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8 am Saturday, according to data released by the government, reports bdnews24.com.

Another 3,837 people recovered from the illness through treatment at home and in hospital care, bringing the tally of recoveries to 572,378.

As many as 26,077 samples were tested across the country in the last 24 hours, yielding a positivity rate of 20.49 per cent.

The latest official figures put the recovery rate at 84.30 per cent, while the mortality rate stands at 1.42 per cent.

Globally, over 134.71 million people have been infected by the coronavirus and 2.91 million have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
