Bangladesh reports one dengue death, 209 hospitalisations in a day

One more patient has died of dengue fever in the last 24 hours, while 209 others have been hospitalised with the Aedes mosquito-borne disease across Bangladesh.

With the latest data, dengue cases this year have risen to 21,327, while the death toll now stands at 84.

The Directorate General of Health Services said as many as 37 new patients were hospitalised in Dhaka city until Saturday.

In addition, 48 were hospitalised in the Dhaka Division, eight in Myemensingh, 31 in Chattogram, two in Khulna, and 83 in Barishal.

Currently, 1,329 patients are receiving treatment for dengue in hospitals nationwide.

Of them, 341 were hospitalised in the capital with 988 across the rest of the country.

Saturday’s health bulletin said the patient who died most recently had been receiving treatment at a hospital under the Dhaka South City Corporation.

Dengue figures peaked in July, with 41 deaths and 10,684 hospitalisations—the highest this year.

Other monthly hospital admissions include 1,161 in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May, and 5,951 in June.

In 2024, a total of 101,214 patients were hospitalised due to dengue nationwide, with 575 fatalities reported.

This marks the third-highest number of hospitalisations due to dengue in the country’s history, while the death toll ranks as the second-highest.

The DGHS has been keeping records of dengue hospitalisations and fatalities since 2000.

Since then, a record 321,179 dengue hospitalisations were logged in 2023. That year also saw the most deaths with 1,705.
