Bangladesh has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia following four days of intense and deadly clashes along their disputed border.
In an official statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed Bangladesh’s appreciation for the unconditional ceasefire agreed upon by both nations, calling it a “positive and timely” development.
The statement also commended the role of Malaysia, the current ASEAN Chair, for its mediation efforts and high-level political engagement in facilitating the truce.
Bangladesh further thanked other friendly nations that contributed to the peace process between the two Southeast Asian countries.
Bangladesh expressed hope that Thailand and Cambodia would pursue peaceful and diplomatic solutions to their century-old border dispute through continued dialogue. It also emphasised the importance of protecting the lives and livelihoods of ordinary people living along the border areas, urging both sides to take necessary steps to ensure stability.
The conflict, which erupted last Thursday, has claimed at least 36 lives in both Thailand and Cambodia, reigniting long-standing tensions over historical territorial claims.
