Bangladeshi-origin NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who was killed in a shooting in New York City, has been buried.

His funeral was held on Thursday afternoon at the Parkchester Mosque in the Bronx, attended by thousands of mourners, reports bdnews24.com.

As Didar’s body was being taken for burial, four police helicopters flew overhead in a show of respect.

Earlier, New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch posthumously promoted him to the rank of First Grade Detective.

Didarul was originally from Kulaura in Moulvibazar and had served with the NYPD for nearly three and a half years. He lived in New York with his parents, two sons, and wife.

On Monday, an armed assailant entered a building in Manhattan and shot Didarul dead along with three others before taking his own life.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a press conference that Didarul, an immigrant from Bangladesh, had settled in New York and was the only child of his parents.

Thousands, including Mayor Adams, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, attended the funeral.

In a written statement before the burial, Didarul’s wife said: “To our family, he was the world. Though my heart is broken, I find comfort knowing that his sacrifice may have saved others in that lobby.”
