Bangladesh will safeguard its independence and sovereignty while adhering to a policy of noninterference in the internal affairs of other states, the foreign minister said after several diplomats Monday discussed bilateral ties in new perspective.
Speaking to reporters after meetings with the foreign envoys at the foreign ministry in Dhaka, Khalilur Rahman outlined what he described as the guiding principles of the new government's foreign policy.
"We will protect our independence and sovereignty. We will not interfere in each other's internal affairs, and our policies will be based on mutual interests and national dignity," he said.
Rahman added that the government began Sunday consultations with Bangladesh's ambassadors posted abroad during which it presented the broad outline of its foreign- policy priorities.
"Our goal is 'Bangladesh First'. Above all else, there will be Bangladesh," he said, signalling a recalibration of diplomatic engagement under the new administration in tune with the ruling-party agenda.
The minister stresses that Dhaka seeks to build mutually beneficial relations with all countries. So far, he says, he has met with the ambassadors of Saudi Arabia, China, India, Pakistan, the United States and the European Union.
"I have observed that they have expressed deep confidence in our government and a strong desire to work closely with us," Rahman said.
The remarks come amid a broader diplomatic push by the new government to engage key regional and global partners as Dhaka seeks to balance strategic relationships while emphasising national interest, sovereignty and reciprocal cooperation.
