Bangladesh ranked 105th among 141 countries in the latest Global Competitiveness Index which was formally released on Wednesday.

Bangladesh was ranked 103rd among 140 countries in the last year’s index. In 2017, the country ranked 102nd among 135 countries.

Thus the country’s competitiveness deteriorated further within a year.

Bangladesh’s rank would slip one position if same set of countries for 2018 were considered.

Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), a local think-tank, unveiled the findings of the report this (Wednesday) morning at Economic Reporters’ Forum (ERF) auditorium in Dhaka.

The index is included in the Global Competitiveness Report - the flagship publication of the World Economic Forum (WEF), where CPD is the partner organisation which conducts the Bangladesh chapter of the study.

The GCR 2019 actually presents new Global Competitiveness Index 4.0, which is estimated under a revised methodology, taking into consideration the impact of technological shift on the extent of country-level competitiveness.

This year’s report provides relative rankings of 141 countries based on the perception of 12,879 leading entrepreneurs and business executives taking part in the surveys conducted in the aforesaid countries.

According to the report, Bangladesh’s weakest positions are in four pillars of the index: business dynamism (121st), labour market (121st), product market (119th) and skills (117th).

The country’s competitiveness has been declined in 10 out of 12 pillars.

Besides the international report, CPD also unveiled the findings of the Bangladesh Business Environment Study 2019. It is an annual exercise undertaken by the CPD which reflects perception of the entrepreneurs and businessmen of the country regarding contemporary issues and concerns, related to Bangladesh economy.
