The Health Minister on Wednesday asked doctors to be more responsible while treating patients so that they do not get deprived of the desired service in hospitals.

"It's my responsibility to protect the doctors, but they (doctors) will have to take the responsibility of providing good service to the patients," Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen said.

"I have responsibility to the doctors as well as the patients. I take both these responsibilities, but no patient should be deprived of medical care in the hospital," he underscored.

Dr Samanta Lal Sen was addressing as the chief guest a programme titled "Donation of Modern Healthcare Equipment and Hands on Training" jointly organised by North America Medical Association and Dhaka Medical College (DMC) on the college premises.

Referring to increasing the number of beds at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn & Plastic Surgery, the Health Minister said that they had started the burn institute with five-bed capacity with the help of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Later, it was upgraded to a 500-bed one with the help of Bangabandhu's daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. "Everything is possible if we try," said a confident Samanta Lal.

Addressing the students of DMC, he praised and said that these doctors have cured thousands of patients day and night tirelessly. The doctors should be given this credit.

At the end of the event, North America Medical Association donated medical supplies to various health centres and individuals in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, the Health Minister also spoke as the chief guest at another discussion meeting organised on the occasion of World Diabetes Day at BIRDEM Hospital the same day later.

The Health Minister said new patients are increasing at the rate of 7 million every year globally.

In Bangladesh, the rate of diabetes patients is increasing day by day.

There are about 13 million diabetes patients in Bangladesh now.

By the year 2035, there may be 22 million diabetes patients in the country, he estimated. Apart from this, currently 50 per cent people in the country do not know that they have diabetes.

Prof AK Azad Khan, president of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh, presided over the event while Prof Dr Md Faruque Pathan presented the keynote paper.
