The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Friday paid tribute to the victims of the Rana Plaza collapse, marking its 13th anniversary.

The programme included a mourning rally, wreath-laying and grave visits at Jurain graveyard in the capital.

Led by BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan, the organisation’s board members laid floral wreaths at the graves of the victims, expressing deep respect for the deceased workers. Later, they joined a special prayer seeking eternal peace for the departed souls.

Speaking to journalists after the prayers, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan described April 24 as a deeply tragic day in the history of the garment industry. He said the association, with support from the ILO and other stakeholders, has been standing by affected families since the incident and continues to provide assistance within its capacity.

He announced that BGMEA will prioritise employment opportunities for any injured worker or family member of the Rana Plaza victims who are currently facing joblessness.

He also urged that the Rana Plaza tragedy should not be used for any narrow or unethical purposes.

On industrial safety, he said the lessons learned from the disaster have brought significant improvements in Bangladesh’s garment sector, which is now recognised globally for safer working conditions. He added that efforts are ongoing to ensure maximum workplace safety for workers.

Senior Vice President Inamul Haque Khan, Vice Presidents Md Rezaul Selim and Md Shihab Uddouza Chowdhury, and directors Nafis-ud-Doula and Mohammad Sohel, along with other members and senior officials of BGMEA, attended the programme.
