One more victim of Monday's fatal train accident at Bhairab succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday, raising the death toll to 18, hospital sources said.
The victim was identified as Nazrul Islam, 39, of Belabo Upazila in Narsingdi.
The accident occurred when a container train hit the last few coaches of the passenger train Egarosindhur Godhuli on Monday afternoon, leaving 14 passengers dead on the spot and three others at a local hospital.
Bhairab Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Shafiqur Rahman Sobuj told the FE over phone that they sent 22 critically injured passengers to Dhaka on Monday night. Of them, 12 were admitted to DMCH and eight others to NITOR or Pangu Hospital.
He further said one unidentified 12-year-old boy with minor injury was still undergoing treatment at the Upazila Health Complex.
Meanwhile, two more inquiry committees were formed to investigate the tragic train accident.
The Ministry of Railways formed a seven-member committee and the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defense formed another six-member committee.
With these, a total of four committees will now investigate the accident.
According to the UNO, the victims of the accident were identified as Afzal Hossain, 23, of Radhanagar Union of Bhairab, Hosna Akter, 14, of Mereda of Nandail, Mymensingh, Mohammad Imrul Kabir of Lakkhipur of Kuliarchar, Kishorganj, Asir Uddin of Doaygaon of Bajitpur, kishoreganj, Sobuj Chandra Shil of Bhairab Ranibazar of Bhairab, Kishoreganj, Mohammad Rabbi of Sreenagar of Bhairab, Kishoreganj, Saimon Mia of Chanpur of Mithamoin, Kishoreganj, Nizamuddin Sarkar of Boroichora of Sorail, Brahmanbaria, Jalal Uddin Ahmed of Nandapara Dakkhinkhan, Dhaka, Mohammad Sujon Mia of Dabailpara of Nandail, Mymensingh, Mohammad Rasel Mia of Mithamoin, Kishoreganj, Golap Mia of Boalia of Kotiadi, Kishoreganj, Fatema, Mohammad Sojib and Mohammad Ismail Mia of Bonti Gangatipara of Nandail, Mymensingh, Mohammad Shah Alam of Sorachar of Bajitpur, Kishoreganj and an unidentified baby aged 3-4 months.
Meanwhile, Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh in a press release issued on Tuesday demanded compensation of Tk 1.0 million each to the victims' families and Tk 0.5 million to the injured people. The association also demanded proper action against the persons responsible for the accident.
PWAB President Mozammel Haque Chowdhury in the statement alleged that the BR does not pay attention to replacement of risky tracks, bridges and locomotives as well as to upgrade the signaling system despite spending a huge amount of money.
As a result, train accidents occur one after another, he added.
