Authorities suspended rail services from Dhaka to Chattogram and Sylhet after a crash involving Egaro Sindhur Express and a freight train in Kishoreganj’s Bhairab.

At least 15 people died in the accident, in which several carriages of the Egaro Sindhur Express overturned, police confirmed.

Police confirmed the death of at least 17 people while many others were injured in the accident that occurred around 3:45 pm at Bhairab Station.

Najmul Islam, director general of Bangladesh Railway’s eastern division, said: “The rail link from Akhaura junction to Tongi was snapped after the accident. Subarna Express, Mahanagar Prabhati, Mahanagar Godhuli, Kalni Express, Chattala Express and Sonar Bangla trains were stranded on both sides.”

“Our relief train that headed from Dhaka has reached near the accident site. It’s hard to say when the train services will resume. They [observation team] can’t speculate anything before reaching the site.”.
