Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay paid tribute to the Liberation War martyrs by placing a wreath at the National Memorial in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, shortly after his arrival for a two-day state visit on Saturday.

After placing the wreath at the memorial’s altar, he stood in solemn silence for a few minutes in remembrance of the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War. A contingent from the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force presented a state salute as a melancholic tune played on the bugles.

Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk E Azam, Bir Protik, Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin, Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Adviser Supradip Chakma, and Housing and Public Works Secretary Md Nazrul Islam were present at the ceremony, BSS reports.

Following the wreath-laying, the Bhutanese prime minister signed the visitors’ book and planted a Bakul sapling on the memorial grounds.

Earlier, a red carpet was rolled out to welcome Tobgay upon his arrival. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus received him at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) after a Drukair flight carrying the premier and his entourage landed around 8:15 am.

Bangladesh’s foreign adviser Md Touhid Hossain and commerce adviser Sk Bashir Uddin are scheduled to meet the Bhutanese leader this afternoon before he holds a tête-à-tête with Chief Adviser Yunus at his office in Tejgaon around 3:00 pm.

Prime Minister Tobgay will also attend an official banquet in his honour later in the evening.
