A Dhaka court on Thursday placed Mian Zahidul Islam Arefy, who claimed to be an adviser to US President Joe Biden, on a five-day remand, in a case filed on charges of breach of trust and treason by providing false identity.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Nurul Huda Chowdhury passed the order on Thursday following the appeal of the investigative officer of the case DB police inspector Md Jamal Uddin Ahmed.
On October 30, Arefy was sent to jail rejecting his bail plea.
Detectives on Tuesday arrested the former army personnel, Lieutenant General (Retd) Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardy from Savar, on the outskirts of the capital, involving the case.
On Wednesday, the court granted an eight-day remand for him in the case.
Earlier on Saturday, Arefi went to BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan and spoke to reporters, introducing himself as an “adviser to Biden.”
Sitting with BNP leader Ishraque Hossain, Arefy even went as far as to claim that the US president is “in full favour of restoration of the caretaker government.”
Video of Arefy sitting at the BNP office, surrounded by party leaders, was circulated on social media by pro-BNP and Jamaat netizens claiming that Arefy, “on behalf of Biden,” came to BNP’s party office to support their cause to overthrow the government.
