The Fire Service has recovered the body of a woman who fell into an open manhole near Tongi's Hossain Market.
Faria Tasnim Jyoti, 28, was found dead in Tongi’s Shalikchura Beel around 9:00 am on Tuesday, according to Md Shahin Alam, senior station officer for the Tongi Fire Service.
Jyoti fell into the uncovered manhole around 9:00 pm on Sunday near the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in the Hossain Market area of Tongi, according to a bdnews24.com report.
Fire Service personnel from Gazipur and officials from the city corporation launched a rescue operation shortly after the incident. But for nearly two days, there was no trace of her.
Jyoti, the daughter of Waliullah Ahamed Bablu of Masjid Para in Ward No. 4 of Chuadanga Municipality, was employed by a pharmaceutical company in the Hossain Market area.
Relatives said she had been walking along the road on Sunday evening to deliver medicine to Tongi Hospital.
Police and eyewitnesses said a manhole in front of Tongi Imperial Hospital had been left uncovered for a long time due to the absence of a slab.
No warning signs had been posted, and the woman apparently fell in while walking along the road. A strong current swept her away.
Locals blamed the accident on the negligence of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), saying that an open drain in such a busy area had created a fatal hazard.
Shobhon, Jyoti’s elder brother, said her phone had been switched off on Sunday, prompting him to begin searching for her.
“At one point, I went to the spot around 7am on Monday and saw my sister’s shoes,” he said.
“That’s when I confirmed that she was missing.”
Shahin Alam said the water from the manhole flows into the Shalikchura Beel.
“In the morning, a rescue operation was conducted in that Beel and her body was found,” he said.
