Bangladesh Railway (BR) started selling of tickets for all its inter-city trains set to resume services from Sunday amid apprehension of facing pressure of passengers due to the considering of increasing bus and launch ticket fare rates.

“As the fare of rail tickets will not be increased even after keeping half of the train seats vacant, we apprehend to face pressure of passengers,” Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujon said while briefing journalists after a meeting with concerned BR officials at Rail Bhaban on Saturday.

The minister said the train services from Sunday will be operated on the trial basis till the end of the government’s announced lock down period June 15.

A total of 16 pairs of trains will ply during the period to understand the situation after relaxation of the lock down for transport movement, he said.

The minister briefed the journalists of the meeting decisions including selling of tickets entirely online, reduction of stoppages, particularly at Airport, Joydevpur and Narsingdi, keeping entrance and exit doors separate in all trains, suspension of aircondition coaches and food supply in trains, movement of passengers from one coach to another to abide by the guidelines of the Health Directorate for the BR.

He said eight inter-city trains will be operated from Sunday and 11 others from June 03. Sales of all these train tickets have already been started online.

Railway Secretary Mohammad Selim Reza, Director General Mohammad Shasuzzaman and other concerned BR officials engaged in train operations, among others, were present.
