A member of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF), who reportedly crossed into Bangladesh through the Chapainawabganj border, has been taken into custody by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

Local residents apprehended the BSF member near the Johorpur frontier in the Sadar Upazila around 8am on Wednesday.

Upon receiving the information, BGB personnel took him into custody.

Lt Col Fahad Mahmud Rinku, commander of the BGB-53 Battalion, confirmed the incident.

However, the BGB did not reveal the identity of the detained officer.

Nazir Hossain, chairman of Narayanpur Union Parishad in the Sadar Upazila, said: “The BSF staffer entered Bangladesh while chasing goats along the zero line of the border. Locals then detained him and handed him over to the BGB.”

Fahad added that the locals caught him on the spot and a crowd quickly gathered.

“BGB personnel rushed to the scene and took him into custody to protect him from public anger.”

According to him, the process of handing the BSF member back to India through legal channels has begun. More details will be disclosed once the process is complete.
