The bus operators are charging two to four times extra fare and also ignoring the government’s directive to carry passengers at half capacity, alleged a passengers' welfare platform.

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samiti called on the government to rid the people from the tyranny of public transport as they are facing amid the second wave of Covid -19 pandemic.

The organisation issued a statement in this regard on Sunday.

Mozzammel Haque, Secretary General of the organisation in the statement said passenger pressure at bus terminals and bus counters in the country has been increasing since the announcement of the lockdown on Saturday in the wake of second wave of the coronavirus.

Ignoring the government's decision to realise the 60 per cent hike in fares in public transport on the condition of transporting half of the passengers, he said most of the bus operators are charging more fare and carrying passengers at full capacity.

Claiming that the bus operators are violating the health guidelines, Mr Mozzammel said the public transport owners of the city service have increased the fares by adding 100 per cent to the pre-fixed fare, which has gone up to 180 per cent from the government-fixed fares.
