Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Rezaul Karim Chowdhury has ordered to complete repair works of all the roads in the port city that were damaged in the current monsoon as soon as possible.

The mayor told The Financial Express, "People are now suffering a lot due to the worst condition of roads in the port city. Considering the people's sufferings, CCC is working to quickly repair the damaged roads in the port city which were damaged this monsoon. Around 25 to 30 per cent of the roads in the city are getting damaged due to rain every year."

"We need around Tk 600 million (Tk 60 crore) to repair the affected roads in the city.

I have ordered to repair the main roads soon whose bad condition is seriously hampering communication.

We have already taken steps to make the drains and canals dust-free to save the people from waterlogging and to save the roads from damage," he added.

He said he will take steps to repair all the roads and footpaths just after the rain.

Vehicles cannot run on the roads in the port city smoothly as condition of the maximum roads is very bad due to damage caused by rainfall and waterlogging in the monsoon.

Most of the roads and alleys have become unfit for vehicular movement due to cracks and potholes, causing sufferings to the pedestrians and commuters.

According to the Chattogram district administration, a total of 50km to 60 km roads were affected in the port city area because of long eight days' rainfall last month. Besides, many drains and footpaths were also affected due to rain and waterlogging.

The port city witnessed a massacre due to waterlogging from August 2 to 10.

Long eight days' rain created ditches, cracks and potholes on the roads.
