Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has called for a united stand against any attempts by anti-independence forces to undermine the nation's values on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day.

In a statement sent to the media on Friday, the interim government's head urged everyone to carry out their duties from their respective positions to thwart any such designs.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin also issued a message, calling on everyone to actively contribute to building a new Bangladesh, guided by the principles of equality, and to play their part from their respective positions, bdnews24.com reports.

On December 14, 1971, Pakistani military forces and their allied groups abducted and killed prominent Bengali intellectuals, including university professors, doctors, artists, writers, and journalists, in a calculated attempt to weaken the Bengali resistance during the war of independence.

The bodies of the nation’s greatest sons, showing signs of brutal torture, were found in Mirpur and Rayerbazar.

These locations later became known as Boddhobhumi, or Rayerbazar Martyred Intellectual Memorial.

Nearly half a century later, as part of the effort to compile a complete list of martyred intellectuals, the previous government prepared a preliminary list of 1,222 individuals in 2020.
