Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan and five other justices from the Appellate Division of Bangladesh's Supreme Court have resigned, a law ministry official said on Saturday.
The justices, including M Enayetur Rahim, Md Abu Zafar Siddiqui, Jahangir Hossain, Md Shahinur Islam, and Kashefa Hossain, submitted their resignation letters to the law ministry, the official said.
Law Adviser Asif Nazrul Islam is expected to forward the resignation letters to the president through the chief adviser.
At 2:30 pm, sources in the law ministry confirmed Hassan’s resignation as chief justice. Later, at 4 pm, Justices Md Abu Zafar Siddiqui and Kashefa Hossain also resigned.
Earlier in the day, students staged protests in front of the High Court Division’s extended building, demanding the chief justice step down.
