Chuadanga swelters at 39.5°C as moderate heatwave grips west-southwest Bangladesh

A moderate heatwave has been sweeping over Chuadanga, sending temperatures soaring and leaving residents struggling with intense heat and humidity.

The southwestern district recorded a maximum temperature of 39.5°C at 3pm on Wednesday, Jaminur Rahman, chief of Chuadanga Meteorological Office confirmed.

He said the highest temperature of the day was logged at 39.6°C in Jashore and Pabna’s Ishurdi, reports bdnews24.com.

The extreme heat has hit daily wage earners the hardest, forcing many to brave sweltering conditions for their livelihoods.

As per meteorological classification, temperatures between 36°C and 38°C indicate a mild heatwave, 38°C to 40°C constitute a moderate one, and 40°C to 42°C is considered a severe heatwave.

Any reading above 42°C falls under the category of an extreme heatwave.

“A moderate heatwave is currently affecting Chuadanga,” said Jaminur. “The air humidity was 28 percent this afternoon.”

He noted that the low humidity levels had made the heat slightly more bearable, though the temperature is likely to rise further and the heatwave may persist in the coming days.
