Investigators collected DNA samples of 36 people until Saturday who are relatives of the victims who died in the devastating fire at Chawkbazar on Wednesday night.

Forensic officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) collected blood and saliva samples at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for cross-matching them with the charred bodies of the victims to hand those over to their relatives.

Until Saturday, the CID collected samples against 19 dead persons whose identities are beyond recognition because of the extent of burn.

Forensic doctors identified 48 victims till the filing of this report and handed over the bodies to their families.

Among them, two bodies were handed over on Saturday while the rest 46 were handed over on the previous two days.

Asraful Alam, an assistant analyst at CID’s forensic laboratory, told the FE that they took samples of those six people on Saturday whose near and dear ones are missing since the devastating fire.

All the samples will be taken to laboratory soon for cross-matching. It takes one to eight weeks to complete the entire procedure of identification.

Salam, father of Mostafa, who was missing after the fire incident took place, and Shirin Begum, wife of another missing person Nurzzaman, submitted the samples on the day.

Besides, Rokhsana, wife of Ibrahim, who was also missing gave the samples.
