Fazlur Rahman, chairman of City Group and one of the country's leading commodity importers and processors, passed away at a hospital in the city in the early hours of Monday, reports BSS.
He was 77.
"Fazlur Rahman, also chairman of Somoy TV, breathed his last at United Hospital in the city around 4am today," family sources said.
He is survived by his wife, only son and three daughters.
Fazlur Rahman was laid to eternal rest at Zurain graveyard after a Namaz-e-Janaza on Gandaria Dhupkhola playground in Old Dhaka after Asr prayer on Monday.
The eminent industrialist built an empire of 40 companies, over the last five decades with businesses ranging from flour, sugar, edible oil, feed and rice milling.
City Group has three economic zones and one hi-tech park.
With a turnover of about Taka 250 billion a year, City Group has employed around 25,000 people under the leadership of Rahman.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Fazlur Rahman, chairman of City Group.
In a condolence message, Sheikh Hasina prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi expressed deep shock at the death of Fazlur Rahman.
In a message of condolence, the minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
Besides, FBCCI president Mahbubul Alam condoled the death of Fazlur Rahman.
