Clashes at eye hospital disrupt services amid protest by july uprising victims

Medical services at the National Institute of Ophthalmology were suspended for several hours after clashes erupted between hospital staff and individuals injured in the July uprising.

The conflict began when the injured accused the hospital of neglect and demanded better treatment. Staff responded by launching a strike over safety concerns after the hospital director was allegedly confined in his office a day earlier. Tensions escalated into physical altercations, prompting intervention from police and security forces. The situation was brought under control by evening.

Patients and their families faced significant distress as the hospital's main gate was locked and admissions halted. Some attempted to flee in panic, according to local media.

The victims allege poor medical care, lack of food, and mistreatment, while hospital staff claim the injured frequently behave aggressively and demand treatment abroad. Earlier in the week, four victims attempted suicide in protest of inadequate care.

The July Martyrs Memorial Foundation promised to investigate the incident and assess if external provocation was involved. Protesters blocked a nearby road but later dispersed at the request of the foundation’s CEO.

In a written statement, the injured demanded better treatment, rehabilitation, employment support, and action against fraudulent claims by imposters.
