The Dhaka University (DU) unit of the Bangladesh Democratic Students' Union (BDSU), also known as Bangladesh Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad, has submitted a memorandum to the university administration calling for immediately removing the floating people and vagabonds from the campus on security grounds.

A delegation of the organisation handed over the memorandum to the university proctor, Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, on Monday saying that removal of the individuals perceived as unwanted or disruptive is urgently needed for the students' safety on the campus.

The memorandum also included four other related demands.

The organisation alleged that the presence of floating people, drug addicts, and vagabonds- especially those living on footpaths, beneath the metro rail stations, and in various parts of the campus-poses a significant threat to the students' safety, particularly of female students.

The five demands placed by the organisation are: Immediate removal of the floating individuals, drug addicts, and vagabonds from the campus, deployment of proctorial team members near the female dormitories during evening hours, taking initiatives to rehabilitate the drug addicts and vagabonds through discussions with the authorities concerned, giving support for rehabilitation of the children growing up on the campus streets and stepping up overall security measures on the campus.

Meanwhile, the Dhaka University administration said that they have already decided to start the process of identifying and evicting the floating individuals and vagabonds from the campus following a meeting held on Sunday.

According to a press release issued by the DU public relations office, the meeting also discussed the installation of CCTV cameras around the Ramna Kali Mandir area and enhancing overall campus security.

Additionally, steps will be taken to remove floating people and vagabonds from the university area and strengthen security monitoring. The DU authorities requested the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) to relocate the foot over bridge stairs inside the boundaries of Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall and Curzon Hall to prevent their unauthorised use.
