Conviction rate in graft cases rises in January

The rate of conviction in graft cases lodged by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) witnessed a hike of 11.39 percentage points on January in 2019 compared to that in December 2018.

The rate of conviction in January this year is estimated around 74.07 per cent, which was 62.68 per cent in December last year, according to the data provided by the anti-graft watchdog.

Besides, a total of 2,768 graft cases, lodged by ACC, are currently under trial in different lower courts across the country in January 2019.

Among those 20 accused have been convicted, seven suspects got acquittal and 17 cases were settled.

The number of graft cases under trial in different courts stood at 2,832 last year, of which 338 cases were filed under the now-defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption (BAC).
