An accused of a rape incident was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Hijaldi village at Kolaroa upazila early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Sohag Dalal of Boalia village and the lone accused of the rape case filed in connection with violating a class III student.
Biplab Nath, officer-in-charge of Kolaroa Police Station, said based on secret information that Sohag was staying at the village, a team of police conducted drive there around 2 am to arrest him.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Sohag and his associates hurled brick chips and bombs towards police, prompting them to retaliate, triggering the gun battle.
The shootout left Sohag with bullet injuries. Later, he was rushed to Kolaroa Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Two assistant sub-inspectors Habib and Sagor were injured during the gunfight.
Police also recovered one shooter gun and five round bullets from the spot, reports UNB.
The rape case was filed on Saturday with the police station.
