The onset of the monsoon season is typically heralded by periods of continuous downpours but, in a surprising change of pace, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast a slight rise in temperatures over the next couple of days.

“As we’re seeing sunny days and a decrease in rainfall, mild heatwaves may continue in some districts. The mild heatwave sweeping through Khulna, Jessore, and Chuadanga may expand slightly,” Meteorologist Tariful Newaz Kabir said on Sunday, reports bdnews24.com.

“At the same time, since it's the monsoon season, there will be sporadic rainfall in some areas. However, the likelihood of widespread rain is low.”

In its regular bulletin on Sunday, the Met Office said the monsoon is currently less active over Bangladesh and weak to moderate over the northern Bay of Bengal. As a result, the chances of rainfall are also lower.

Still, some places in the Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may experience temporary gusts with lightning and light to moderate rain or thundershowers.

Elsewhere in the country, the weather is expected to remain largely dry with partly cloudy skies.

Day and night temperatures may rise slightly across the country.

The Met Office also said that a mild heatwave that is currently sweeping across the Khulna Division and the districts of Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Panchagarh may persist.

Khulna recorded the highest temperature in the country in the last 24 hours at 37 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the lowest temperature was recorded in Dhaka, Tangail, and Sylhet at 24 degrees Celsius.

The highest rainfall during the same period was recorded at 28mm in Tarash, while Dhaka saw 27mm of rainfall.
