A relentless heat wave is sweeping over many parts of Bangladesh, with temperature soaring well above seasonal averages, disrupting public life and posing serious health risks across the country.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the ongoing heat wave, categorised as "severe" in parts of the country, has pushed temperature beyond 40°C in several districts including Chuadanga and Rajshahi.
Chuadanga witnessed maximum 41.2°C on Friday followed by Rajshahi 40°C and Dhaka 39.2.
The BMD has issued warnings advising people to take precautionary measures and avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak hours as the heat wave might persist for a couple of days.
"This is one of the most prolonged and intense heat waves in recent months," said a meteorologist at the BMD.
"There's very little chance of immediate rainfall or relief in the next few days," he added.
The health sector is already feeling the strain. Hospitals across the country are reporting a rise in patients' suffering from heatstroke, dehydration, pneumonia, heat exhaustion and others.
