A total of 184 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country in 24 hours till Saturday morning.

Of them, 62 were hospitalised in Dhaka, the Directorate General of Health Services said in a regular update, reports UNB.

Bangladesh was hit by a massive outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease this year. The large number of patients put a severe strain on the country’s medical system.

Since January, 93,361 people were hospitalised with dengue. Of them 91,062 made full recovery.

The situation has been improving in recent weeks. Currently, 1,053 patients, including 443 in Dhaka, are being treated at hospitals.

The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research confirmed 98 dengue deaths after reviewing 158 reports out of 246 cases.

Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection, causes flu-like illness, and occasionally develops into a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue.

According to WHO, about half of the world's population is now at risk.

WHO says there is no specific treatment for dengue or severe dengue but early detection and access to proper medical care lowers fatality rates below one per cent.
