Two construction workers died after allegedly inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a septic tank near the municipality bus stand area in Sonagazi upazila of Feni on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Md Sajib, 21, and Md Arafat, 22. Both were residents of Charkhwaj village of the upazila.
According to local sources, one of the workers first entered the under-construction septic tank to clean it. When he did not respond for some time, another worker went down to rescue him. Both later fell unconscious inside the tank.
As there was no response from inside for a long time, locals informed the Fire Service.
Firefighters rushed to the spot, rescued the two workers and took them to a hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead, said Sonagazi Fire Station In-charge Md Nurul Alam.
Doctors and fire service officials suspect that the two died of suffocation caused by toxic gas accumulated inside the tank.
The building owner, Jamal Uddin, has been absconding since the incident.
Kamruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sonagazi Model Police Station, said the bodies have been sent to the morgue for autopsy. Legal action will be taken upon receiving a written complaint, he added.
