A mobile court in Rangpur on Friday sentenced three people to two-month imprisonment each for illegally extracting and selling sand from the river Ghaghot in Pirgachha upazila today.
Led by Pirgachha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Md Nazmul Haque Suman, the mobile court conducted a drive in the Nagarjitpur Kalurghat Bridge area of the upazila this afternoon.
At that time, three people were arrested red-handed along with illegally extracted sand and two mini trucks from the spot.
Later, the mobile court sentenced the arrested persons to two-month imprisonment without labor.
The convicts are Saiful Islam, 32, son of Bahar Ali of Maital village, Mominul Islam, 35, son of Meher Ali of Nagarjitpur village, and Masud Rana, 38, son of Naya Mian Member of Anandi Dhaniram village in the same upazila.
The UNO told local reporters that the drive to stop illegal soil and sand lifting from rivers and other water bodies will continue.
Officer-in-Charge of Pirgachha police station Noor Alam Siddiqui said, the convicts have been sent to Rangpur Central Jail and legal action will be taken regarding the seizure of seized sand and two tractors.
