6,868 hectares of land come under onion farming in Rangpur zone

RANGPUR, Feb 20: Onion plants at different areas in Rangpur agriculture region are growing well, signaling a good yield of the crop this season.
Sources said the prospect of the crops is bright in the districts of the zone.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rangpur official sources, onion has been cultivated on around 6,868 hectares of lands in five districts under the region this season.
The districts are Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha.
Visiting some areas it was found that onion plants growing well and the growers busy in taking care of their fields.
Due to good profit peasants are getting more interested in the cultivation of different varieties of spicy crops including onion in recent years than the cultivation of some other crops, sources said.
Moksedur Rahman, a farmer at Ranipukur area under Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur told this correspondent that he cultivated onion on 40 decimals of land during this season spending around Tk 7,000 and the condition of its growth is satisfactory.
He expects to begin harvest within next one month.
At least 35 maunds to 40 maunds of onion could be produced from his land this season, he added.
The grower said he had made a good profit last year.
Aminul, another onion grower of Nazirdaho village in Kawnia upazila said he prefers spicy crop farming than the cultivation of other crops owing to huge profit. He has cultivated onion on 30 decimals of land this season.
During last few years he has been getting a good yield as well as expected profit from farming of the crop, he also said. This variety of spicy crop is being cultivated both in land and homesteads of the region, he said.
The DAE official sources said the peasants under the region have been earning good profit through farming of spicy crops including onion, garlic, chilli and ginger in recent years.
On account of timely supply of adequate agri-inputs and congenial weather condition, yield of spicy crops is being enhanced across the region, sources added.
