Two people were killed in an attack allegedly over Awami League infighting in Morelganj upazila of Bagerhat on Monday.

The deceased were identified as Ansar Ali Dihidar, general secretary of Doibaggahati union unit of AL, and Sukur Sheikh, 42, an activist of the unit, reports UNB.

Another person, Bablu Sheikh, was injured in the attack and he was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital.

Bagerhat Police Super Pankaj Chandra Roy said three miscreants wearing masks attacked the Doibaggahati union parishad complex in the upazila this afternoon and tried to kill its chairman Shahidul Islam.

However, the chairman's supporters caught them and beat them mercilessly, killing one on the spot and injuring two others, he said, adding that one of the injured succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Two supporters of the UP chairman were arrested for interrogation over matter, the SP said.

However, injured Bablu claimed that armed cadres of Shahidul picked them up from Doibaggahati Bazar area in the afternoon and took them to the union parishad complex.

"They forced us to wear masks. Later, the chairman took us outside and started shouting saying we tried to kill him. His supporters swooped on us with arms and sticks," he said.

He also claimed that they were victims of a planned conspiracy over previous enmity, he said.
