Awami League leader beaten to death in Kurigram; one held

A local Awami League leader was beaten to death allegedly by a group of people over a previous enmity in Kurigram on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Shariful Islam Sohan, 40, treasurer of the Municipal unit Awami League and a transport businessman, reports UNB.

The incident took place around 7pm in Khalilganj Bazar area of the town.

Police detained Rezvi Kabir Chowdhury Bindu, Kurigram Sadar Upazila Chhatra League general secretary, in connection with the murder, said Al Asad Md Mahfuzul Islam, superintendent of Kurigram Police.

Following the incident, agitated transport workers blocked the major roads including Ghoshpara, Kanthalbari, and Pateshwari in the town.

Later, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control around 9pm.

Sohan's friend Khandkar Redwan Mahmud said they were standing in front of the Abhinandan Convention Center in the town.

"Suddenly a motorcycle lost control and fell in front of our car," Redwan narrated. "Then we rescued two injured motorcyclists and sent them to the hospital in an auto."

Later, when we were coming towards the city, some youths riding on several bikes led by General Secretary of Upazila Chhatra League Rezvi Kabir Chowdhury Bindu attacked us, leaving Sohan seriously injured.

"We took Sohan to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival," Redwan said.

Masudur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kurigram Sadar police station, said that preparation was being taken to file a case.
