'Baikka Beel' in Sreemangal Upazila of Moulvibazar district has now become a bird sanctuary this winter season.
'Baikka Bil, a vast wetland of 170 hectares, is widely known as a fish sanctuary.
Hundreds of people come to the spot every day from different places of the country to see different species of birds.
The birds include peregrine falcon, Khoira Kastechora, Beguni Kalem, white heron, Patisorali, Pankouri, Tila Lalpa, Chotidubur, Balihash, Rajshorali, Sorali and Balihash.
Bird lovers enjoy chirping and natural beauty in Baikka Bil which has taken a unique look with gatherings of visitors, said a visitor, Ataur Rahman.
A number of visitors were seen moving around in small boats in the spot.
People can easily witness the sunset from the top of the observation tower set on a nearby site by the forest department.
A number of young people with binoculars and telescopes were seen enjoying the natural beauty of the whole site from the watch tower.
Locals said the number of birds is higher than that in the last two years.
A team of the Bangladesh Bird Club said in a survey last week that 7,870 birds of 38 species have come to Baikka Bil from abroad.
In 2024, the wetland witnessed 4,615 birds of 33 species and 6,141 birds of 40 species in 2023.
Officials said often the number of birds vary for reasons. In some years, it's found more in December or in February.
The bird population here depends on protection given by sanctuary and RMO and peaceful environment.
